Horsegirl experiment with the basics on Phonetics On And On

Horsegirl—the New York-via-Chicago trio of best friends Nora Cheng, Penelope Lowenstein, and Gigi Reece—have released their anticipated second album, Phonetics On and On.

It follows 2022’s Versions of Modern Performance and was produced by Cate Le Bon and recorded at The Loft in Chicago, Horsegirl’s original and sonic home, Phonetics On and On is an exploration of the lines between pop, minimalism, and playful experimentation. The album intersects the lineages of post-punk, art rock and twee pop, mapped out by forebears like Dolly Mixture, Shop Assistants, The Raincoats and The Velvet Underground.

RTRFM’s Ethan Bellhouse speaks with Penelope Lowenstein about the record, asking when the trio first started putting the album together.
