Sino Swing – Interview & Live Performances
All-strings Perth Gypsy jazz outfit Sino Swing bring their characteristic flair and exuberance into the RTRFM studios, with a joyous hour-long live set of well-loved jazz manouche standards and lively chat, with Plucked Strings’ Natalie Ong.
The band’s name (pronounced “see-no swing”) pays homage to the diversity of the members’ heritage. Bandleader/manager/violinist Zola Li hails from Taiwan, while Edwin Ch’ng (guitar) is Penang-born. Elden Garrett (guitar) has his roots in Margaret River and Wayan Dana (double bass) is from Indonesia.
Coming from individually eclectic musical backgrounds, the band members’ early influences range from fingerstyle and pop to classical and blues. However, they all profess to sharing a great love for the style of swinging Parisian jazz popularised by Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli in the 1930s (Quintette du Hot Club de France).
The pairing of violin and guitars made for a fantastic live show, with tracks that included ‘Bossa Dorado’ and ‘Clair de lune’. Hear them join Natalie below.
