Web Rumors reimagines classic songs both old and new

Walyalup/Fremantle-based songwriter and producer Em Burrows continues to refine her craft and blur all other lines with Web Rumors, her prolific new-wave-influenced electronica project. She’s just released a new single, ‘Cruel Sister’ and remixed The Rosemary Bead’s ‘Breath’ to help celebrate RTRFM’s 45th birthday — now available on limited  7″ vinyl.

‘Cruel Sister’ is Em’s 21st-century interpretation of a 17th-century English murder ballad that tells the story of two sisters, a man courting both of them, jealousy and death. Burrow’s reimagining is part of a larger undertaking to recontextualise traditional British folk songs with electronic sounds, blending new-wave sonics with the unique harmonies and timbres of traditional folk music.

Em joins RTRFM’s Chris Mason on Get Up Morning to talk about the project, her recent Rosemary Beads remix and her musical inspiration.
