‘Movies We Want Remade’ with Special Guest Cecilia Allen (Movie Squad Podcast Episode #21)

Remakes, reboots, re-imagingings - they are the life force of Hollywood film-making! But have the big studios actually asked us what we'd like to see remade?! For this episode of the Movie Squad podcast, co-hosts Simon Miraudo and Tristan Fidler are joined by special guest film reviewer Cecilia Allen (of Unscripted - The Film Show podcast) to discuss their choices for the topic 'Movies We Want Remade.' We consider how great cult movies could be re-imagined, which classic literary titles could use another big-screen adaptation, what comic-book character properties need better cinematic treatment, which classic comedies could use a new cast and some fresh jokes, what would be the best horror titles that could be revived, and much more! We also read out suggestions from our dear listeners on the Movie Squad facebook page!

‘Alien’ with Special Guest David O’Connell (Movie Squad Podcast Episode #16)

"In space, no one can hear you scream." So says the infamous tagline to Alien (1979), the science-fiction horror classic directed by Ridley Scott and celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2019. Simon Miraudo and Tristan Fidler are joined by film critic David O'Connell (from X-Press Magazine) to reflect on their impressions of Alien, when they first saw it, how it hold ups to recent viewing, thoughts about the cast including Sigourney Weaver as Ripley, what they know about the making of the film including the work of artist H.R. Gieger, how do the other movies in the Alien franchise compare, and where does Alien remain relevant forty years later. Much like an ill-fated crew dropping into a darkened room of face-hugger eggs, this is a true exploration and excavation of an outer space nightmare. Enjoy!

‘Fascinating Failures’ with Special Guest Janice Loreck (Movie Squad Podcast Episode #12)

Look, most movies are fine. Some movies are great. A lot of movies suck. But the special few? These are the 'Fascinating Failures', and it's to these feathered fish that Movie Squad hosts Simon Miraudo and Tristan Fidler turn their attention today! They're joined by friend-of-the-show Janice Loreck to talk (and, mostly, laugh) about the objectively terrible movies they're a bit obsessed with, from mother! to Southland Tales (not to mention 1941, The Bonfire of the Vanities, The Counsellor and Bram Stoker's Dracula). You better believe we jam-packed this wild episode with incriminating sound clips from the 'fascinating failures' themselves to make our case.

‘Rok Riley’s Favourite Movies’ with Special Guest Rok Riley (Movie Squad Podcast Episode #11)

For our 11th episode of the official Movie Squad podcast, we sit down with a radio legend, Rok Riley, the host of the long-running, popular Friday Full Frequency. Simon Miraudo and Tristan Fidler chat with Riley about her movie-watching habits growing up with her family, discuss how childhood favourites shape our future tastes, and the difficulty in finding time to watch new movies when you are the busiest DJ in town. Then we explore Rok Riley's Favourite Movies, which covers a broad range including a Chevy Chase comedy classic to early Quentin Tarantino to a hip-hop concert movie about a "retirement" that never lasted. It's a fun, engaging chat that proves, to paraphrase the Full Frequency theme song, "movies make us lose control!"

‘Do Over Oscars’ with Special Guest Nathan Beard (Movie Squad Podcast Episode #9)

"It's a wonderful night for Oscar, Oscar, Oscar..." That's what Billy Crystal used to sing when he'd host the Academy Awards, but was it always a wonderful night for great cinema? Were Oscar winners always justified and Oscar losers robbed of just acknowledgement? For this special episode of the Movie Squad podcast, we honour Oscar season by rewriting the past and holding our own 'Do Over Oscars' - looking back at which past winners (in all categories) should be re-evaluated and handed to the rightful nominee! Simon Miraudo and Tristan Fidler are joined by acclaimed artist Nathan Beard who shares his love of the Oscars - ranking his favourite award categories, for example - and sharing his picks for which Oscar winners need to be handed back and redistributed. Who didn't deserve Best Director in a year when Robert Altman and David Lynch were in the nominee pool? Should the category of Best Original Song be done away with completely? And which hideous-looking movie unbelievably won the Best Costume category? The Oscars will never be the same after this round table!

‘1999’ with Special Guests Libby Noble & Rhian Todhunter (Movie Squad Podcast Episode #8)

We just wanna go back, back to 1999, to take a ride in our old cinematic neighbourhood! Taking a cue from Charli XCX, our Movie Squad reviewers Simon Miraudo and Tristan Fidler are joined by RTRFM's new Out to Lunch (Monday) duo Libby Noble and Rhian Todhunter to talk the films of 1999! Listen to them reflect on the best, worst and weirdest trends from 20 years back, and re-evaluate films like Fight Club, Magnolia, American Beauty, Being John Malkovich, The Blair Witch Project and many, many more. Is it really the 'great' year for cinema everyone remembers it to be? Why did everyone go so crazy for The Cider House Rules? And how come Tom Cruise played so many psychosexual weirdos? We get into it.

It's that most wonderful time of year... the Holidays! A time for celebrating with loved ones, sure, but more importantly, a time to watch movies! For the fifth episode of the Movie Squad RTRFM Podcast, presenters Simon Miraudo and Tristan Fidler seek to broaden the canon of Holiday Movies, to push beyond Christmas-themed movies like Gremlins and the 'Is Die Hard a Christmas movie?' debates and explore new titles that symbolise what holidays mean for all of us! They welcome special guest, the talented comedian/actor/radio presenter (and so much more!) Andrea Gibbs who picks her five favourite Holiday Movies with unexpected, amazing results (including such sights as Ben Mendelsohn being dodgy, baseball teams, and grisly-death-by-lasers, etc.). Then, Simon and Tristan present their own lists of non-denominational Holiday Movies for Andrea to judge and select if they are worthy of becoming canon (not all make the cut!). Please enjoy this cracker of an episode!

For this conversation specially recorded for the podcast, we are joined by actor, writer and theatre maker Adriane Daff from the theatre collective The Last Great Hunt (who have recently announced work premiering in the 2019 Perth Festival with Le Nor) to discuss the genre of Biopics! With the recent Queen biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody, scoring big at the box office (but not so much with critics), we discuss the Best and Worst of Biopics from the past decades, offering our own personal favourites, analysing what specifically defines a biopic, examining why its a genre that is a clear route to the Oscars for an actor, and mining all the pitfalls that can occur when portraying someone famous - all the prosthetics, accents, wigs, historical accuracy/inaccuracy, 'print the legend' myth-making, outdated codes of representation and much, much more!
